Smart says she was referred to a Santa Barbara clinic specializing in type 1 diabetes and pregnancy, where a doctor reportedly told her to "start over," a euphemism she understood as termination. She says that option was not for her and remembers pacing outside the clinic in distress.
Instead of following that advice, Smart says she became a poster child for pregnant diabetics, crediting one specialist who supported her through daily calls. She went on to raise two sons, Connor and Forrest Gilliland, with her late husband Richard Gilliland, who died in 2021. The American Diabetes Association notes that careful glucose management and healthy habits can make pregnancy possible for people with diabetes.
