Just months earlier on CNN with Elex Michaelson, Brown sounded less certain, suggesting Harris might struggle to win the governor’s race and praising her legal skills more than executive experience. His recent comments mark a noticeable U-turn in public advice about her path.
Brown and Harris dated in the mid-90s when she was in her late 20s and he was in his 60s. He appointed her to the California Medical Assistance Commission in November 1994 — a post paying $72,000 with monthly meetings — and has acknowledged helping her early career and first run for San Francisco district attorney. Political strategist Garry South also likened Newsom and Harris to “two cats circling each other,” underlining the long-running rivalry.
